In Greek mythology, Aphrodite was born from the sea — rising from the ocean foam, carried to shore by the waves. For anyone who has stood at the edge of the Gulf of Mexico and watched the water shimmer in the late afternoon sun, that image doesn't feel like ancient history. It feels like right now.
Indian Rocks Beach is one of Pinellas County's most beloved stretches of coastline — a place where locals and visitors alike come to reconnect with something elemental. Dean saw in that landscape the same qualities that define Aphrodite: beauty that is both powerful and gentle, wild and serene, eternal and fleeting.

While the Gulf Coast and Greek mythology shape the feeling of the Aphrodite collection, the reality of where this piece began is very different.
Dean created the original Aphrodite drawing while he was still wrongfully incarcerated—inside a prison art book, using whatever colored pencils he could get his hands on.
Art supplies weren’t guaranteed. Sometimes they were considered contraband. Creating wasn’t just expression—it came with risk.
But even in that environment, he kept drawing.
Aphrodite became more than an idea. It became a way to mentally leave—to connect with the ocean, with beauty, with something beyond the walls around him.
Today, that same piece lives on in a completely different setting—just minutes from the Gulf of Mexico, where the feeling that once existed only in his mind is now part of everyday life.
Inspired by Greek mythology and a deep longing for the ocean, Aphrodite became more than a drawing. It became a connection to freedom, beauty, and a life beyond confinement.
